4 Items That Require Climate-Controlled Storage

Storage units are a godsend for many people. They have cleared up so much necessary space for millions of people around the world, allowing people to declutter their homes and offices, and making room for the things that really matter. They are also great places to store sensitive and valuable items. There are, however, some instances where the belongings you are storing need some extra TLC in the form of climate-controlled storage. Below are four items that require climate-controlled storage.

Wood furniture

Wood furniture, especially antiques, are definitely in need of climate-controlled storage. Over time, if left to the whims of the elements, wood furniture can warp, rot, become infested with mould and mildew and end up becoming useless, losing value, or both.

Leather furniture

Leather is similar to wood furniture, but even more sensitive because it is prone to damage from swings in both hot and cold temperatures. Temperature swings can stretch and crack leather, and, even more upsetting, can completely change the colour of a beautiful piece of leather furniture. If you live in an area of the country where the temperature can swing not just seasonally, but on a day-to-day basis, you might want to invest in a climate-controlled storage unit for your leather furniture.

There is little in this world as pleasing to the senses as entering a well stocked home library, complete with all of the books and information that you have accumulated, or that have been passed down to you throughout your lifetime. Sometimes those books are antiques or family heirlooms, original first prints that are in need of special protection. Paper and book bindings are easily destroyed by humidity.

Artwork is, perhaps, one of the self storage items that absolutely requires climate control. Even if you are storing your artwork in protective cases, or in a specially designed art storage tube, climate control is a must. The best environment for artwork is about 50 per cent humidity and between 70 to 75 degrees F. This is in addition to other protections like canvass covers, file cabinets and glass casing.

Climate-controlled storage units are helpful in some cases, downright necessary in others. If you are storing valuable, delicate, weather sensitive items in a self storage unit, you are not really getting the full benefit of a self storage unit if you are not taking your belongings’ special care needs into consideration. Keep the above four classes of self storage items in mind when deciding whether a climate-controlled storage unit is the best way to go.
